A snippet from the Library Journal‘s brief review of American and British Theatrical Biographies implies that biographical additions cover only those “performers who  have joined the theatrical world in the last 32 years.” This statement is far from true as a quick look at the sources surveyed would reveal. Just one example. When the original directory was published only four volumes of A Biographical Dictionary of Actors, Actresses, Musicians, Dancers, Managers, and Other Stage Personnel in London, 1660–1800 had been published (and included in my book). The new Index includes all 16 volumes of A Biographical Dictionary of Actors, Actresses, Musicians, Dancers, Managers, and Other Stage Personnel in London, 1660–1800, which means hundreds of 17th and 18th century theatre personnel are included in the new Index.
